Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common comorbidity that leads to poor outcomes in people at high risk for the development of type Vitamin D, which is a possible mediator. In D2d, we investigated the relationship of baseline indices of NAFLD with incident type 2 diabetes and whether the effect of vitamin D on diabetes prevention was modified by NAFLD.

We found that the presence of NAFLD at baseline predicted the development of diabetes. The effect of vitamin D on diabetes risk was not modified by baseline NAFLD indices. Individuals with likely steatosis at baseline had a smaller increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level in response to vitamin D than those without steatosis, suggesting that these individuals may need higher intakes of vitamin D to achieve the desired effect.
