Interim analysis results are reviewed

The Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) reviews the results of the interim analysis and recommends that the D2d study proceed to completion as planned.

A participant from the Atlanta VA Medical Center site is the 500th participant enrolled in D2d.

A participant from the University of Kansas site is the 1st participant enrolled in D2d.

OCTOBER 15, 2013

Recruitment begins

D2d begins screening people at high risk for diabetes to join the study. Screening takes place in many study sites throughout the United States. The first participant to is screened at the Florida Hospital Translational Research Institute site. Click here to see where D2d takes place.

SEPTEMBER 19, 2013

First NIDDK supported trial to use IRBShare

D2d is the first NIDDK-supported trial and the fifth NIH-supported study to join the IRB Share program.

JULY 9-10, 2013

Investigators’ Kick-off meeting

The first meeting of the D2d research team is held in Bethesda, MD. D2d investigators and coordinators plan a successful study launch.

JUNE 1, 2013

U01 grant to conduct D2d is awarded

Tufts Medical Center receives the U01 cooperative agreement grant to conduct D2d. The grant is supported by NIDDK and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.

MAY 31, 2013

DSMB inaugural meeting

The inaugural meeting of the D2d Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) takes place in Bethesda, MD. The DSMB reviews and approves the study’s protocol.

U01 cooperative agreement grant is reviewed

The U01 grant application undergoes a favorable scientific peer review by NIH Special Emphasis Study Section.

U01 cooperative agreement grant is submitted

The D2d team submits a 1,140 page U01 grant application to NIH for funding to conduct D2d.

Progress of U34 planning phase is reviewed favorably

The NIDDK External Evaluation Committee reviews the progress of the U34 planning phase and recommends that the D2d team proceeds with submitting a U01 grant application.

Association between higher blood vitamin D level and lower risk of Diabetes in the Diabetes Prevention Program is reported

An observational study in the Diabetes Prevention Program, a cohort of people with prediabetes, supports an association between high blood levels of vitamin D and lower risk of developing diabetes. Click here to read the article.

U34 planning grant is awarded

Dr. Pittas and colleagues are awarded a NIH-supported planning grant which provides financial support to finalize the study design of D2d, develop the necessary infra-structure and prepare for the U01 grant application to seek support to conduct D2d.

Association between blood level of vitamin D and Diabetes Risk in the Nurses’ Health Study is reported

An observational study in the Nurses’ Health Study, a longitudinal cohort of women, supports an association between low blood levels of vitamin D and development of diabetes. Click here to read the article.

U34 planning grant application is submitted

Dr. Pittas and colleagues submit the U34 planning grant application to NIH. The grant will provide critical funding to complete the design of D2d, establish the D2d research team and create the required organizational structure to conduct the study.

NIDDK allows submission of a grant application to plan the D2d study

Dr. Pittas and his team receive approval from NIDDK to submit a U34 planning grant application to NIH to plan D2d.

NIDDK Large Studies Committee reviews preliminary concept of D2d

The scientific justification for D2d and the preliminary concept of the study design go through multiple rigorous internal reviews by NIDDK.

CaDDM clinical trial is funded

The Vitamin D and Calcium Homeostasis for Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes (CaDDM) study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIDDK and the Office of Dietary Supplements).  The CaDDM study enrolls its first patient in September of 2007.

Idea is conceived

The idea that vitamin D is linked to risk of developing type 2 diabetes is conceived by Dr. Pittas.
